Meal Planning Monday

Another week, another meal plan. Last week's went well but I did swop two meals round for practical reasons. This week's is going to be a bit different because it's school holidays and we're visiting family for part of it, but still, I need a plan - and to do a shop before I go! I've deliberately chosen pizza for Thursday as I know that is when I am on my own with the children all day and they like to help.

This week will therefore consist of:

Monday - not cooking
Tuesday - Swedish meatballs, mash and peas
Wednesday - All in one lentil and sausage casserole
Thursday - Homemade pizza and salad
Saturday - Sticky marmalade chicken, mash and green beans

Reasonably balanced - and hopefully lots of veg. Lunchtimes will mostly consist of soup, sandwiches or wraps, scrambled eggs or omelettes.

Why not pop over to Mrs M's blog and check out more entries for Meal Planning Monday? You might get some fab new ideas. Feel free to join in if you like.

Losing my cool

Today, I'm going to share more with you than I've ever shared before. I feel quite vulnerable doing this so please do bear with me. You see, I've been tagged, as you do, by Pippa from A Mother's Ramblings because she wanted to see what guilty pleasures I've been concealing from you all. Then, Chris from Thinly Spread also tagged me before I got the chance to post.

I'm going to share with you the contents of my fridge. Yes, that's right. My fridge. Eep.

So, I took the photo on Friday night. Our shopping generally arrives on Tuesday and I store any meat that's not going to be used immediately in the freezer, plus a trip away means there might be less food than normal. I don't store fruit in the fridge unless it's berries etc. And there is rarely any booze in there!

Here we go...

(Try to ignore the broken shelf and the rubbish photography.)

I also have to itemise what is in inside. Deep breath...

There is: active yeast, tomato purée, sun-dried tomato purée, garlic purée, rosemary, half a lemon, root ginger, eggs, butter, coconut milk, balsamic salad dressing, semi-skimmed milk, milk chocolate ice cream sauce, cream of horseradish, lemon juice, lime juice, gravadlax sauce, goose fat, cornichons, red Thai curry paste, green Thai curry paste, tahini, pinole (dunno either - husband uses it), seeded wraps, coloured cheddar, white cheshire, ham, quince relish, pasta sauce (left over from a recipe), low fat Greek yogurt, raspberry yogurt, blueberry yogurt, low fat mayonnaise, ricotta (left over from another recipe), milk carton from school that Monkey didn't drink, sticky hoisin sauce, red pesto, capers, coarse grain mustard, christmas chutney (home made), chimichurri sauce, lingonberry sauce, squeezy mustard, margarine (for chocolate cake), leftover salad, leftover ricotta, spinach and tomato frittata, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, potatoes, onions, red peppers, carrots, basil, sweet potato, cucumber, flat leaf parsley, thyme.

I don't know if that was what Pippa was expecting, but that is what is there.

I guess I'd better tag a few people to carry this on and be brave like me. This has led me to have a brilliant idea. During April, I have been taking part in a comment group, so I've been getting to know a few other bloggers, whose blogs I am still discovering. I think this meme would be a brilliant ice-breaker so I'm going to tag them all.

So I am tagging

Helen at The Petit Mom
Kathryn at Diary of a (not so) Single Mum
Sabina at Mummy Matters
Laura at The McCaskie Clan
Clare at Seasider in the City
Liska at New Mum Online

Can't wait to see what they come up with!

Was my fridge what you expected? Were there any surprises? Do you think my fridge contents say anything about me? Let me know in the comments below. Be gentle.

Review and Competition: A Right Royal Knees-Up CD set

I know, two competitions in two days; I am really spoiling you!

The News of the World have sent me copies of a special double CD set, called A Right Royal Knees-Up, in honour of the forthcoming royal wedding, which is now less than three weeks away. The set is available free to all readers of the News of the World. Two vouchers will be published in the paper - one today and one next Sunday - and vouchers can be exchanged for CDs at all Tesco stores nationwide, excluding forecourts. Vouchers are valid for one week so you have plenty of time to collect your free CDs.

CD1 comes in a collectible wallet with space for CD2 to be added. Each CD has 8 tracks, featuring hits from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, although a good half are from the 80s, which is the decade of my teens and early adulthood and therefore a decade of some fond memories for me. The tracks are billed as "floor-fillers" and there certainly aren't any duff tracks that you've never heard of before. Make your own mind up - the track listing is as follows:

CD1 – available from today,

1. Culture Club - Karma Chameleon
2. Katrina and the Waves - Walking on Sunshine
3. MC Hammer - U Can’t Touch This
4. Chesney Hawkes - The One and Only
5. Bryan Ferry - Let’s Stick Together
6. Heaven 17 – Temptation
7. Pato Banton feat. Ali & Robin Campbell - Baby Come Back
8. The Swinging Blue Jeans - The Hippy Hippy Shake

CD 2 – available next week

1. The Proclaimers - I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)
2. Belinda Carlisle - Heaven is a Place on Earth
3. Human League - Don’t You Want Me
4. Kajagoogoo – Too Shy
5. Supergrass – Alright
6. Huey Lewis and The News - The Power of Love
7. Tommy James and The Shondells - Mony Mony
8. Jeff Beck - Hi Ho Silver Lining

Some crackers there, eh? Good for family parties, I'd say - whether you have it in a street or not. Neither CD is particularly long - they're around half an hour long each - so I wouldn't want to rely on them totally to provide a musical background to a party. But it wouldn't be a bad hour. I wonder if the News of the World has sent a set to Buckingham Palace. I can just imagine them singing along to the Proclaimers a bit like in the Comic Relief video from a few years ago as the evening draws to a close, worse for wear on sherry and port. Or maybe not. Given that William and Kate were born in 1982, they probably prefer something a little more contemporary.

If you can't get hold of the vouchers, never fear. I have one set of CDs to give away to one lucky winner.

All you have to do to enter is to leave a comment below, telling me which of the tracks listed above is your favourite. Mine is Temptation by Heaven 17 - a cracking dance tune that reminds me of the year I took my A levels and went off to University. Good times.

The competition will close at 23:59 on Tuesday 19th April and the winner will be drawn at random.

Good luck!

Blogoversary Competition - Win Pampered Chef goodies!

This was meant to be part of my Happy Blogoversary post, but in the end, it was so long, I thought I'd keep it separate. I wanted to do a competition to celebrate my blogoversary and asked if anyone would like to donate me prizes. I got no response initially, but then one of my lovely Twitter friends, Laura, offered me some of her Pampered Chef products. Now, I'm a big fan of their products so I said yes before she could change her mind! Huge thanks to her for donating the prizes.

So, I have 4 prizes to give away to some of my lovely readers. The first prize is a Food Chopper, worth £29.50, which is a great aid to chopping up all sorts of things. It's good for getting children involved as they can chop food safely without getting their fingers sliced and it's fun to use (as well as being easy to use).

Then, along similar lines, I have 3 runner up prizes of My Safe Cutters, worth £4.25 each which are child friendly knives that can be used to cut up food - even things like apples and cheese - and they won't hurt themselves.

To enter the competition, all you have to do is leave me a comment below and tell me which is your favourite post on The Five Fs.

You can gain one extra optional entry, by tweeting the following:

Happy Blogoversary

Today, The Five Fs blog is one year old. One whole year of me, wittering on about all sorts of stuff. It started with So, this is me, which was more of an arrival with a whimper than a bang. I remember feeling very, very self-conscious when I posted links to it on Twitter. After all, I was in awe of all the fantastic bloggers that I'd recently discovered. How could I ever match up to them? I felt pretty dumb, to be honest. What right had I to do this? I felt like everyone was going to laugh at me. They didn't. Well, not to my face anyway.

200-odd posts later, I'm still here. I still feel like a newbie to the blogosphere, and compared to some bloggers that I look up to, I am - they've been blogging years. However, it's become apparent from chats I've had on Twitter in the last few weeks that I'm regarded as an old hand. Old being the operative word. It's very flattering, but deep down, I feel that I'm still learning, which is good, because I like learning. I'm odd like that.

Blogging was a slow burn at first - I only posted infrequently, but now I think about blogging all the time. I see blog posts in everything, but thankfully, most of them never see the light of day. Lucky you.

I intended to blog about the five Fs in my life when I started (hence the name) but when I look back, I blog about football far less than I thought I would do. I still don't post lots of recipes but I seem to blog about food in more general terms quite a bit. I wasn't blogging that much about fitness but since I started My Fitness Story... earlier this year, it's had an at least weekly presence on my blog. I'm in awe of the guest posters who've taken the time to tell their stories. A huge thank to all of them for subjecting themselves to public scrutiny. (And if you want to have a go, feel free to get in touch, slots are always available!)

A lot of my posts have centred around the children, which is as it should be, since they are growing and changing, frustrating and delighting me - all in equal measure - every single day. I don't always blog about the bad times, I don't always blog about the really good times, but some of the little details are often mentioned that I would probably otherwise forget. Like the conversation I had with Missy Woo yesterday. She told me that she had a gingerbread man for pudding at school then went onto say "But he got up, jumped off the plate and ran away up the field so I had to go and chase it so I could eat it" which was just brilliant imagination, and made me laugh.

In the time I've been blogging, I've discovered that writing funny posts is a hell of a lot harder than serious ones. I've discovered I write long posts that I have to edit right down. I've discovered that editing them can sometimes turn them into completely different posts. I've discovered I like writing a lot more than I thought. And that what I think will make a good blog post sometimes doesn't at all, and vice versa.

And I have discovered that people do read my stuff. That, for me, makes it all worth it. When people say to me they love my blog or a particular post, I'm blown away. If I say I'm proud, that makes me sound big-headed but I don't think I've ever done anything like this that's been so successful. I have to say thank you to all who read or support this blog in whichever way, shape or form. You all rock. Fact.

A special thank you must go to Garry, who writes The Blog Up North, who started me blogging by convincing me to write some guest posts for him and then lying being kind about them enough to inspire me to start this blog. He is the person I turn to when I need advice on all things blogwise, he's one of my regular commenters and gives me encouragement when I'm doubting myself or my blogging. I blame would like to thank him for everything he's done this last year. He's a better writer than me, and ten times funnier, but I'll let him off.

It's been an amazing experience, this blogging. Through it, I've met some lovely people, some of whom I'm now proud to call close friends. I've been invited to places I never even dreamed I'd visit. It has made me laugh out loud but I've also cried buckets at times. The good and the bad, the happy and the sad, all of it has enriched my life.

I may feel like the newbie for a while yet, but I know that blogging has me hooked. There should be more blogoversaries because the ride is far from over. I hope you'll stick around.

Why not celebrate my blogoversary by popping over to enter my blogoversary competition

Netmums Review: Littlest Pet Shop Hamster Playground

My children love getting toys to try out and review. Unfortunately, having a girl and a boy of primary school age, toys are rarely unisex so one of them is generally going to be disappointed and we have strops about the unfairness of it all.

This week, it was Monkey who was disappointed as I was sent the Littlest Pet Shop Hamster Playground - really not his thing these days. I did my best to keep it away from him for a while - I forgot to hide the parcel before they came home from school one day and he spied the word "TOYS" on the box. He actually believed me when I said it was not toys then read the word "Hasbro" as "Hash Browns" so I got away with it for a day or two as he honestly thought he could eat the contents of the box. Bwahahaha.

So, yesterday afternoon, Missy Woo and I gave the toy a run for its money whilst he was at football. We had an hour or so. The first fifteen minutes were spent getting the toy out of its packaging. Grrr.... it's a pet peeve of mine but this seemed worse than normal. In particular, there were lots of what looked like small animals that were actually just cardboard cut-outs. There was sticky tape, double knotted thread, and some plastic clasps, bit of plastic, and that thin stretchy, almost invisible yarn. Honestly, is all that completely necessary when it's already in a cardboard box?

Once devoid of its packaging, there was thankfully little or no assembly to be done. The playground comes with two small animals - hamsters, I guess, d'oh! - but there is space to fit more on. I guess it's a collectible set, so they are encouraging you to buy more, but Missy Woo was a bit disappointed she couldn't put animals everywhere. Annoyingly, nearly all the promotional images I've seen of this on toy shop websites show up to 8 animals on the playground, giving the visual impression that they are all included. Please, don't do this - children of that age don't read the small print.

The playground consists of a hamster wheel, which you turn with a handle, a spinning hamster ball which is detachable for rolling around the room, and a spinning apple perch. There's a little house in the shape of a piece of cheese, and a cute little water bottle. It also has some tiny pieces of hamster food and a bed, which I'm sure to curse when I tread on them in the days to come. It's pretty solidly made, unlike some flimsy plastic toys. The animals need to be clicked into place on the wheel and perch which Missy Woo seemed to find quite hard to do at first. It was the same with the hamster ball - she had to ask me to twist it together properly.

That said, Missy Woo seemed to love it from the moment we (finally) got it out of the packaging. She told me that she thought it was great and that she loved the apple and the hamster ball best. She also said she might not play with it every day - go figure! She was however moved enough to draw a picture of it, which she insists she is going to take into school to show everyone what her new toy looks like. She also made me take a photo of this masterpiece so that I can share it with you all. Here, then, is Missy Woo and her tribute to the Littlest Pet Shop Hamster Playground.

All in all, I thought this was pretty good value, although I can't help feeling it would be better with more figures to play with. And much less packaging.

Oh, and true to form, Monkey came home from football and promptly threw a tantrum about not having his own toy. Hopefully, we'll have a boy toy to review soon. At which point, Missy Woo will sulk. I can't win.

Littlest Pet Shop Hamster Playground is widely available. I found it for £14.99 in Argos but it's more usually £19.99.
